Help me become a veterinarian
The back story...
I guess I'm lucky because I have always known what I wanted to be when I grew up. Now that I'm grown up... I'm still working on getting there.
Being a veterinarian has always been my dream. I won't bore you with all the details of my life. However, a little background is probably necessary. I worked as a professional dog trainer for seven years, specializing in behavior modification while pursuing my undergraduate degrees.
After earning two BS degrees, I obtained full-time employment as a veterinary technician at a private practice, caring for small animals and exotics. Additionally, I worked at a local low-cost veterinary clinic on an as needed basis.
Working at the low cost clinic confirmed what I already knew; there are many people struggling to try to provide adequate veterinary care for their pets. Once I am a practicing veterinarian I plan on continuing to work with spay/neuter and low cost vet clinics.
In the summer of 2009 I had surgery to remove cervical cancer and some abdominal lesions. I got really lucky and caught the cancer early, my follow-up screens have been negative so far... girls go get your annual check-up... EVERY year. I had no insurance. So there I was, with my savings depleted.
What's going on now...
And then the real fun begins...
I am actually in vet school!
After four years of applying, I'm finally invited to attend vet school, woo hoo! Unfortunately, it's in another state... which means bigger moving expenses and out-of-state tuition (to the tune of more than $30,000 per year and increasing each semester).
So I managed to get a $15,000 scholarship my first year. Which sounds like a lot until you realize it didn't even cover my first semester of tuition and fees. I have earned a few more scholarships, but nothing near the cost of attendance, let alone living expenses.
I have never been financially wealthy, so it was after much coaxing and hours of deliberation that my husband finally talked me into setting up a website where family, friends and any greatly appreciated random benevolent individuals can donate to...
...help me be a vet.
